What Driver's License Do I Need to Rent a Bike in Iceland?

· Iceland Bike Rental

The last thing you want after flying to Iceland is to find out you can't ride. We get this question almost every week, so we thought it was time to write it all down in one place. The short answer is: yes, you need the right license, and no, not all licenses will work. Here's what you actually need to know.

The Basics: License Requirements

To rent a motorcycle with us, you'll need:

  • A valid motorcycle license appropriate for the bike category (in Iceland: A for unrestricted, A2 for mid-size up to 35kW)
  • At least 1 year of riding experience counted from your license issue date
  • A license in English or Roman script (Latin letters), OR
  • An International Driving Permit (IDP) if your license is in another alphabet

That last point is important: if your license is written in Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Cyrillic, or any non-Latin script, you'll need to bring an IDP with you. The IDP is an official translation of your license into multiple languages and is recognized internationally.

What About Non-EU Licenses?

Great question—and yes, we accept them. The key is that your license needs to be readable and verifiable. So whether you're from the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, or anywhere else, as long as your license meets the requirements above, you're all set.

If you're traveling from a non-EU country, we recommend:

  • Bringing your physical license (we need the original)
  • Getting an International Driving Permit before you leave home if your license isn't in Latin characters
  • Carrying both documents together—the IDP is just a translation, not a replacement

Your License Must Show

All driver's licenses accepted for rental must include:

  • A photo of you
  • A driver's license number
  • Issue and expiry dates
  • Your full name

Make sure your license isn't expired before you arrive. We can't rent to you otherwise, and there's nothing we can do once you're here.

Age and Experience Requirements

  • Minimum age: 25 years old (standard insurance requirement for motorcycle rentals in Iceland)
  • Minimum riding experience: At least 1 year (from your license issue date)

Your license issue date matters—when companies check your experience, they look at the original date, not any renewal dates. If you're close to the 1-year mark, bring any official documents proving your riding history.

Physical Documents Required

Digital or virtual licenses are not accepted. You must bring your physical license card. The same rule applies to payment—we'll need a physical credit card at pickup.

Why All This Paperwork?

I know it sounds strict, but Iceland takes road safety seriously (for good reason—the weather and terrain are unforgiving). Rental companies are legally required to verify your credentials, and the rules exist to keep you, other travelers, and locals safe on Iceland's Ring Road.

Pro Tips Before You Arrive

  1. Order your IDP early if you need one. Don't wait until the last minute—it can take 2–4 weeks depending on where you live.
  2. Bring both your license and IDP—the IDP alone isn't valid without your original license.
  3. Check your license expiry date. We can't rent to you if it's expired while you're here.
  4. Take a photo of your documents before you travel, just in case you need to reference them.

Questions?

If you're unsure whether your license will work, reach out to us before booking. A five-minute email now beats a ruined day at pickup. We want you on the road enjoying Iceland—not sitting in the office sorting out paperwork.
